I have to say that the likelihood of a zombie outbreak is not more possible than other Sci Fi tropes such as global pandemics or impact from a comet or meteor. Hell, I would say that Bruce Willis riding an asteroid down to Earth Dr. Strangelove style is more likely than a zombie outbreak. Now, zombie outbreak as a means to prepare for a breakdown of civilization is far easier to conceive of. Mad Max will happen far before zombies.
